Enabling Yum fastest mirror

Yum fastest mirror is a very useful plugin for the “yum” package manager found on CentOS, it helps pick out the fastest mirror to download updates quicker from the fastest mirror available at that time.

If you're on CentOS 6,

yum install yum-plugin-fastestmirror

If you're on CentOS 5,

yum install yum-fastestmirror

Then edit the following file,

/etc/yum/pluginconf.d/fastestmirror.conf

and make sure it contains the following lines,

[main]
verbose = 0
socket_timeout = 3
enabled = 1
hostfilepath = /var/cache/yum/timedhosts.txt
maxhostfileage = 1

now run,

yum update

and you should notice the packages downloading faster.
