Installing Ubuntu desktop + VNC on a Ubuntu based VPS

Please note: This guide isn't tested. It won't harm your VPS but it might not work.

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
apt-get install gnome-panel gnome-settings-daemon metacity nautilus gnome-terminal
apt-get install gdm
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
apt-get install tightvncserver
nano ~/.vnc/xstartup
#!/bin/sh

export XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1
unset SESSION_MANAGER
unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS

[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &

gnome-panel &
gnome-settings-daemon &
metacity &
nautilus &
gnome-terminal &
chmod +x ~/.vnc/xstartup
chmod +x /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
/etc/init.d/gdm start
vncserver :1

Download Tight VNC client here: http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html

After you install it, run the VNC client and insert your VPS IP address and VNC server number on the VNC Server field and click on “Connect”. In this tutorial the VNC server number is :1, so you must fill in :1
