This guide is for users accessing a VPS with a desktop environment over VNC and want to change their Linux user password through the terminal.

🖥️ Step 1: Connect to Your VPS via VNC

Use your preferred remote desktop client (e.g., Remmina, RealVNC, or Our CrownPanel VNC) to connect to your VPS.

🧭 Step 2: Open the Terminal

Most Linux desktop environments support the shortcut:

Press Ctrl + Alt + T

This will open a terminal window.

🔐 Step 3: Change the Password

In the terminal, type:

passwd

Then press Enter.

You will see:

Enter new UNIX password:

Type your new password (note: it will be hidden) and press Enter.

Re-type the new password when prompted, then press Enter.

You should see a confirmation message:

password updated successfully

✅ Step 4: Exit the Terminal

exit

Press Enter to close the terminal or log out of the session.

📝 Conclusion

Changing your Linux password through a VNC desktop environment is quick and secure using the terminal. Whether you're maintaining security or updating credentials, the passwd command makes it easy. Always choose a strong password to protect your VPS from unauthorized access.
