How to Access Your FTP Account using FileZilla or WinSCP

In this guide, we’ll go through the steps to connect to your DirectAdmin FTP account using popular FTP clients - FileZilla and WinSCP.

To create an FTP account via DirectAdmin, you can refer to this guide:

Once you’ve created an FTP account in DirectAdmin, you can easily access your website files using an FTP client like FileZilla or WinSCP.

We will guide you step-by-step for both clients (FileZilla and WinSCP) so you can easily access your website files.

For security reasons, CrownCloud uses a custom FTP port (10500) for secure FTP connections. Make sure to use this port instead of the default port 21.

For the FileZilla

Follow the steps below to connect your FTP account using FileZilla.

1. Open FileZilla

  • Launch the FileZilla Client on your local system.

2. Open the Site Manager

  • Go to the File menu (top left).

  • Select Site Manager

3. Create a New Site

  • Click the New Site button in the bottom left corner.

  • Give it a name (e.g., My Server or your domain name).

5. Enter Your Connection Details

  • In the General tab, fill in the following:
Field Value
Protocol SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol (recommended for secure connection)
Host Your domain name or server IP (e.g., server.example.com)
Port 10500
Logon Type Normal
User Your FTP username (e.g., user@example.com)
Password Your FTP password

If you are using our DirectAdmin hosting, it’s recommended to use SFTP (port 10500) for a secure and encrypted connection. As an alternative, you can use FTP (port 21), but please note that FTP is not encrypted.

6. Save and Connect

  • Click Connect (to connect immediately), or

  • Click OK (to save for later).

7. Set Default Directories (Optional)

  • In the Advanced tab, you can specify:

  • Default local directory - folder on your computer

  • Default remote directory - path on the server (e.g. /public_html)

8. Once connected

  • you’ll see your local files on the left and your server files on the right

  • You can now upload or download files by dragging them between both panels

For the WinSCP

Follow the steps below to connect your FTP account using WinSCP.

1. Open WinSCP

  • Launch the WinSCP application on your local system.

2. Create a New Connection

  • When the login window opens, click “New Site” on the left panel.

3. Enter Your Connection Details

File protocol Select SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol
Host name Your domain name or server IP (e.g. server.example.com)
Port number 10500
Username Your FTP username (e.g. user@example.com)
Password Your FTP password

If you are using our DirectAdmin hosting, it’s recommended to use SFTP (port 10500) for a secure and encrypted connection. As an alternative, you can use FTP (port 21), but please note that FTP is not encrypted. To switch to FTP: Change File protocol to FTP – File Transfer Protocol Change Port number to 21

4. Save the Connection (Optional)

  • Click Save to store your login details for future use.

  • You can give the connection a name like My Website (SFTP).

  • Check Save password if you’d like WinSCP to remember it.

5. Click Login to connect

  • If prompted about a host key, select Yes to trust and store it.

6. Once connected

  • You’ll see your local files on the left and your remote files on the right

  • You can transfer files easily by dragging and dropping between panels
