How to Create a Datastore in Proxmox Backup Server (PBS)

Introduction

A Datastore is the storage location where Proxmox Backup Server stores backups for virtual machines, containers, and other protected data. Before connecting Proxmox VE to PBS, you must create at least one datastore.

This guide explains how to create a local datastore using the Proxmox Backup Server Web Interface.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure that:

  • Proxmox Backup Server is installed and accessible.
  • You have root access to the PBS server.
  • A storage disk or partition is available for storing backups.
  • You can access the PBS Web Interface.

Create the Backup Directory

Connect to your Proxmox Backup Server via SSH.

Create a directory that will be used to store backups.

mkdir /backups

Note: You may choose a different directory based on your storage configuration.

Configure the Datastore

Enter the required datastore information.

Configure the following fields:

  • Name: Enter a name for the datastore.
  • Datastore Type: Select Local.
  • Backing Path: Enter the backup directory created earlier.

Example:

/backups

Leave all remaining options at their default values unless your environment requires different settings.

Click Add to create the datastore.

Verify the Datastore

After the datastore has been created, it will appear in the Datastore list.

Select the newly created datastore to view its details and summary.

View Connection Information

With the datastore selected:

Navigate to the Summary tab.

Click Show Connection Information.

This displays the information required when configuring Proxmox VE to use this Proxmox Backup Server.

The connection information typically includes:

  • Server Address
  • Datastore Name
  • Fingerprint
  • Username

Keep these details available for the Proxmox VE configuration.

After creating the datastore, you can add the Proxmox Backup Server as a storage target in your Proxmox VE node and begin creating backups of virtual machines and containers.
