How to Generate a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) in cPanel

Generating your own Certificate Signing Request (CSR) in cPanel allows you to request an SSL/TLS certificate from an external Certificate Authority (CA) for securing your website.

Prerequisites:

• A registered Domain name.
• cPanel access and the Domain setup on the account.
• Domain's DNS record pointing to the right server.

Following are the steps to generate your own CSR (Certificate Signing Request)

Step 1: Navigate to CSR page

Under the Security section, click on the SSL/TLS menu and then click on the "Generate, view, or delete SSL certificate signing requests" link in the page.

Step 2: Generating the Certificates

In this page, you can now generate the required Certificates for Signing Request.

For the option, Key, select the required type of Key to generate,

Next, enter the required Domains in the given text area,

Next, you will need to input a series of information related to the domain and about your company.

Enter your Email ID and also provide a strong passphrase.

Once these informations are provided, you will then receive the Encoded Certificates for Signing Requests.

These will include the Certificate itself and a Private Key. Save the above certificate and private key safely in your computer.

Step 3: Disable AustoSSL

It is important to exclude the domains for which you are generating an extenal SSL/TLS installation. Else, the server would auto-generate an SSL certificate and your external SSL/TLS would be invalidated.

Navigate to SSL/TLS Status under the Security section.

Here you will find the options to Exclude any of the domains from Auto-SSL.

For the required Domain, Click on the "Exclude from Auto-SSL"

You can now send these Certificates to your Certificate Authority to generate a SSL/TLS certificate. Most of the CA providers will provide with the necessary instructions on how to install the SSL/TLS certificates.
