Enable ICMP Ping Response for Windows Servers
In this Wiki. article we will show you how to enable ICMP Ping response for Windows Servers. This is applicable for Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016, 2019 and 2022 versions.
By default, Windows servers do not respond to any Ping requests. Some times, users need the ping response to check for network connectivity and such.
We will enable couple of rules in Firewall which would allow the server to respond to any Ping requests it receives.
Step 1: Open the Firewall
In the Start Menu, search for Firewall and click on the Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security.
Step 2: Enable the "File and Printer Echo Request" rules
Once you open the Firewall window,
On the left sidebar, select the Inbound Rules.
And then on the main page, search for the rule called File and Printer (Echo Request...).
If you have IPv6 address configured on the server, you can enable the IPv6 rule as well.
So your server responds over IPv4 and IPv6.
Right click on the rule and click on Enable Rule.
This concludes the topic of Enabling ICMP Ping response on Windows Servers.
